It is one of those things that seems glamorous at first glance, but once you think about the setting for even a moment, the appeal starts to fade. The reality is far less stylish than the stories people tell.
After all, airplane bathrooms smell like a mix of strong bleach and stale urine, and the space is so tiny that even turning around feels like a challenge. There is hardly enough room for one person to move comfortably, let alone two people trying to do anything more than an awkward shuffle.
Then there is the cabin crew, who have seen this play out far too many times to find it cute or funny anymore. For them, dealing with this kind of behavior is just another part of the job, and it lost its novelty long ago.
Now, a flight attendant has shared how often passengers actually try to join the mile high club, along with what usually happens when cabin crew catch them in the act.
Even though the mile high club gets talked about a lot and has become a well-known trope, she explained that it happens far less often than people assume. Many travelers seem to imagine it is common, but she said that is simply not the case when you look at real numbers.
“I would say one in twenty or thirty flights,” she said. “Not really that often.”
“It’s worse when you’ve got children on board and it’s in the daytime,” she said.
However, she added that things can be a little different during night flights. In those cases, she sometimes gave passengers more leeway if they were quiet and discreet, because it avoided causing a bigger scene for everyone on board.
“If it’s on a night flight and they’re being discreet, I probably wouldn’t even interrupt them if I’m honest.”
“One of my friends had a situation where there was a young lady of 18 who was quite determined to join the mile high club, and she just grabbed anyone,” she said.
Even after the cabin crew stepped in and sent her back to her seat, the determined passenger did not stop trying. She kept pushing boundaries despite being told to stop, which made the whole situation even more awkward for the crew.
“My friend said she went to speak to her parents, because she was actually travelling with her mom and dad.”
“She was only 18 bless her, she didn’t do it again.”
