WNBA’s Sophie Cunningham Struck By Flying Dildo In Mid-Game Disruption

A surprising and inappropriate moment unfolded in Los Angeles during a WNBA matchup between the Indiana Fever and LA Sparks, when a sex toy was thrown from the crowd and ended up striking a player.

With just under two minutes remaining in the second quarter on Tuesday night (August 5), the object flew through the air and landed beside Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham. Kelsey Plum then kicked it off the court and into the stands.

The unexpected moment caused a bit of a pause in the game. Cunningham, who clearly saw the humor in it, was seen laughing as she walked over to the Sparks’ bench, unable to hold back her reaction.

While it’s not completely unheard of for unusual objects like toys or random items to be thrown onto the court, this specific kind of incident is a bit more extreme. Just a week earlier, a similar situation happened in Atlanta during the fourth quarter of the Dream’s game against Golden State in College Park, Georgia.

The person responsible in that case was immediately removed from the venue, and according to the WNBA, they’re now facing a one-year ban from attending games.

And the strange trend didn’t stop there. On Friday, another sex toy was thrown during the third quarter of Golden State’s 73-66 win over the Chicago Sky.

A game official responded by kicking it aside, and it was later collected and disposed of properly.

Responding to the growing concern, the league released a statement saying: “The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans.”

“In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.”

Interestingly, there seems to be a bit of backstory to the Los Angeles incident. It looks like a fan may have taken a comment from Cunningham as an open invitation—or a dare.

Back on August 2, she had posted a tweet in response to all the toy-throwing incidents, saying: “Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us.”

After she became the latest player to get hit, she seemed to realize the irony, retweeting her own post with the words: “This did NOT age well.”

She also touched on the topic again over on Instagram, where she gave her followers a bit more insight, saying: “No way that thing actually hit me. I knew I shouldn’t have tweeted that.”

Ironically, her plea to stop only made her the next target in this strange streak of incidents.

After the latest object toss, the internet lit up with reactions as people tried to make sense of what’s going on.

Some were left scratching their heads. One person summed it up by asking: “I thought the dildo guy was arrested? How is this still happening?”

Another user chimed in with: “I refuse to believe this isn’t some type of marketing tactic.”

Others leaned into the humor, with one saying: “Bro security fr gonna be checkin for dildos every wnba game now.”

And someone else simply called it: “This is the most hilarious scandal of all time.”
