A Midwestern state is set to create its own iteration of “Alligator Alcatraz,” the infamous migrant detention center that the Trump administration inaugurated in Florida last month.
According to Fox News, Indiana lawmakers are reportedly working in conjunction with U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement to finalize a new facility that could accommodate hundreds of migrants awaiting deportation. Dubbed the “Speedway Slammer,” this center is part of ICE’s larger initiative to increase immigration detention capacity by 80,000 beds over the next year.
“COMING SOON to Indiana: The Speedway Slammer. Today, we are announcing a new collaboration with the state of Indiana to enhance detention bed capacity by 1,000 beds,” stated Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. “We appreciate Governor Braun’s partnership in helping to remove the most dangerous individuals from our country. If you are in America unlawfully, you may find yourself in Indiana’s Speedway Slammer. To avoid arrest, consider self-deportation now using the CBP Home App.”
The Indiana facility is anticipated to add up to 1,000 beds, offering ICE a strategic site to detain undocumented immigrants captured in blue cities like Chicago, which has emerged as a central point of the migrant crisis under the Biden administration.
“We are honored to collaborate with President Trump and Secretary Noem as they work to eliminate the most dangerous individuals through this innovative partnership,” Indiana Governor Mike Braun remarked in a statement on Tuesday. “Indiana is adopting a comprehensive and cooperative strategy to address illegal immigration and will persist in leading the way among states.”
Funding for this facility is sourced from the Big, Beautiful Bill, which President Donald Trump enacted into law last month.
As stated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Speedway Slammer is included in the 287(g) program, which fosters collaboration between ICE and local law enforcement agencies that consent to aid in the capture and removal of undocumented immigrants.
