An adult performer has been found guilty of killing the father of her children, a crime she committed while secretly married to her own stepson. The disturbing case shocked investigators and has drawn national attention because of the tangled relationships and the brutal way the murder unfolded.
Devyn Michaels was convicted of murdering her ex-husband, Johnathan Willette, and now faces a sentence of 51 years to life. The killing took place in August 2023, and prosecutors described the crime as one of the most unsettling they had seen.
“And all I can say is, ‘Buckle up, because you’re in for a wild ride’,” prosecutor John Giordani told jurors as he presented photos from the violent crime scene, including an image showing Willette’s decapitated body.
Michaels had married Willette in 2012, and the two divorced in 2018. After their split, she later married his son from a previous relationship, 29-year-old Deviere Willette. In court, she described the marriage as a “marriage of convenience.” Testimony suggested the pair had been romantically involved for years before tying the knot.
Prosecutors argued that Michaels became resentful after Willette gained sole custody of their daughters, even though he was preparing to move back in with the family. They said she feared his presence would disrupt the life she had built with Deviere.
The former couple had reportedly talked for months about trying to keep their family unit together, but investigators believe Michaels viewed Willette as an obstacle and acted out of jealousy and anger.
“He didn’t say anything,” she told detectives. “He stopped moving.”
Police testified that she admitted to cutting off his head afterward. Henderson Police Detective Dennis Ozawa told the court that Michaels placed the severed head in a laundry basket, took it to her home, and later discarded it in a neighbor’s trash bin, according to 8 News Now.
Authorities have not been able to recover Willette’s head or the murder weapon. His body was found by his mother, “wrapped in blankets and bloody,” according to the arrest report.
Prosecutor Brittni Griffith argued that Michaels wanted her ex-husband “out of the picture,” adding: “And the truth is, the walls were closing in on Devyn Michaels and the fantasy that she had put together.”
