My Daughter-in-Law Laughed at My ‘Silly Book Club’ and Used Me as a Babysitter — So I Taught Her Respect, Grandma Style

It was when my daughter-in-law Lena started dropping off my grandchildren at my house without asking and in a casual manner during the time that I was spending with my cherished reading group that I understood that something needed to happen. My grandchildren are very precious to me, but I realized that something needed to change. Next, I began to instruct her in a lesson of respect that will remain with her for the rest of her life.

In the present moment, I am living by myself in the same house where I raised my children, and I have trained myself to keep myself engaged in order to maintain my independence. After being married for 42 years, my husband passed away three years ago, leaving a hole in my routine that I am currently working to fill. I am going through the process of learning how to fill this gap.

That being said, I have lived a full life with my family, and I am not the type of person who wallows in grief. I have moved on with my life.

Both of my children, Nathan, my son, and Elise, my daughter, are so sweet and wonderful. Their presence is a privilege for me.

They have bestowed upon me the gift of four very stunning grandchildren. Two young children, both of whom are bursting with vitality, are the children of the couple, Nathan and Lena, who are parents to both of them. Because Elise, her husband, and their two children all live in a different state, I do not get to see them as regularly as I would like to. This is something that I would like to change.

I get to spend a lot of time with those grandchildren because Nathan’s family lives in close proximity to me. This allows me to see them very frequently.

I have a deep affection for each and every one of my grandchildren, and I am always happy to provide a helping hand to anyone who needs it. I have always been the one to step up and help out, whether it was for an unforeseen illness, troubles with the business, or picking up students from school. I do not have any problems at all.

During the month of the previous month, when Ivy, who was just three years old at the time, felt ill with a cold, I stayed over for three days and prepared soup and read her favorite books. In order to give Lena a chance to get some rest, I spent several hours walking through the hallways with Milo, who was just two years old at the time. Milo was showing signs of getting toothless and grumpy.

The fact that grandmothers get paid to do that is something that I would not change because it is their job.

Recent happenings, on the other hand, have made it possible for me to establish a venue that is solely dedicated to my own pursuits: a monthly reading group that includes participants from both the neighborhood and the church.

Our presence is not for the purpose of sharing snacks or engaging in idle discussion. We share a lot of laughs, we go deeply into the motivations of characters, we talk about the conclusion of the story, and we pick books that have a huge impact on our life when someone else views a narrative surprise in a completely different manner.

This has turned out to be a wonderful time for me. Once a month, I got the opportunity to take on the role of Sylvia, the reader, for a period of three hours. Otherwise, I would be Sylvia, the caretaker or the grandmother.

Even if this was the case, Lena did not make any effort to give the impression that she appreciated it.

Is it a club for reading? She gave me a sneer and remarked, “Really?” in response to what I had already told her. My dear Sylvia, this is such a delightful concept. Almost as if it were something that would be seen in a television show.”

When she talked, she did it with a tone of disdain. With that being said, I didn’t give a damn about it because I wasn’t doing this for her approval whatsoever.

This month, we are actually reading a mystery that is very engaging. We are doing this throughout the calendar month. “There are a lot of unexpected turns.”

Afterwards, she smiled at me in a condescending manner and then shifted the subject of conversation to the fact that she required assistance in picking up Milo from daycare.

Taking a step back, that definitely ought to have been a warning sign. The fact that Lena had always been one to push boundaries was something that I thought was simply the stress that comes with being a new mother.

It is now abundantly evident to me that she did not regard my book club to be significant; rather, she considered it to be a silly impediment that stood in the way of her plans for daycare.

It then proceeded to take place after that.

As we were ready to begin our very first official meeting of the book club, which had been scheduled for several weeks, Lena appeared at my front door with both of my children in tow. This was just as we were about to begin our very first meeting.

There was a Thursday on Wednesday. The cake that I had baked was being cut into slices, and at the same time, I was arranging the teacups. Upon hearing her car outside, I realized that the ladies were on their way to arriving at any time now.

Even before I had the opportunity to meet her, she had already started unbuckling the vehicle seats. I had no chance to meet her.

Sylvia, she met her with a trill as she greeted her. “Opportune timing!” During the next few hours, I would appreciate it if you could keep a watch on Ivy and Milo.

I reminded Lena that the day of the book club was also the day that we were meeting. On many instances, I have provided you with information.

She chuckled and then replied, “Oh right, your book thing,” alluding to me in the process. I will be back after a moment. Come back before it’s time for dinner!

She disappears without a trace, leaving behind no bag, no snacks, and not even a message saying when she would be napping. She has not been seen or heard from since.

I have no question that I adore my grandchildren, despite the fact that they are really young at this point. It is also difficult to discuss the concepts of a book while Milo is smearing applesauce on your plants and Ivy is tearing up Kleenex like party streamers. This makes it difficult to have a discussion about the topics of the book.

When the arrival of my friends came, I was feverishly attempting to keep the commotion under control. On the sofa, Ivy had spilled the crayons all over the place, and Milo was using a spoon as a weapon by swinging it around in a circular motion.

Vera commented, “Perhaps we ought to reschedule,” as she sidestepped a flying block into the air. “Perhaps we ought to put it off.”

When Lena continued to behave in the same manner without providing them with any previous warning, my friends from the reading group had reached their breaking point.

“Sylvia, you need to establish some boundaries,” Ruth told Sylvia. “I really need to help you.” Should you fail to intervene, she will proceed to behave in this manner in the future.

The next thing that Vera said was, “She is taking advantage of your generosity.” We are all being treated in an unfair manner as a result of this.

In every single respect, they were absolutely right.

I was not someone that Lena considered to be someone who had her own plans; rather, she considered me to be a free babysitter. It was clear that she did not respect either my time or the commitments that I had made.

During the course of the evening, I remained silent and pondered the circumstances that had transpired.

In the event that she appears to be interested in participating in the drop-off game, I will explain the rules to her in my own unique manner.

In a subsequent instance, when Lena arrived just before book club, I greeted her with a friendly greeting, waited ten minutes after she had left, and then loaded the children into my vehicle that I had brought with me.

After that, I drove straight to her workout class, which was located in the central business district.

While I was walking into the studio with Milo on my hip and Ivy at my side, I observed that she was positioned in a yoga pose in front of me.

My darling, my name is Lena! I cried out in the most enthusiastic tone that I could muster.

She adjusted her position in the middle of the posture, expressing her surprise as she did so.

Do you have the ability to watch the youngsters for a short while? In a relatively short period of time! I stated, reaffirming her standpoint, which was identical to hers.

While Ivy was assisting Ivy in taking a seat nearby, I carefully positioned Milo next to her mat before she had the opportunity to raise an objection.

“Thank you so much!” As I moved away, I smiled and then exited the room.

Moreover, I persisted in my pursuit of it.

Do you have a date at the spa? When I arrived, I brought my children with me. Are you going to have lunch with your close companions? I dropped by since I needed to get some diapers.

In the event that this occurred, I would greet the person with a warm grin and inquire, “Just a couple of hours—you don’t mind, right?”

Her third episode of losing her cool came after I had left the children with her at a coffee shop. This was the third time she had lost her temper.

When she was in the later hours of that day, she shouted out, “You can’t just leave the kids with me without any notice!” ” In the meantime, I was getting ready! That was such a humiliating sight!

“Oh?” I asked in response while crossing my arms across my chest. Did you get ready? How about the one I had for the book club that I belong to?

Even though her cheeks went red with fury, I was able to keep my cool throughout the entire situation.

“It is a great pleasure for me to be of support to you, Lena. However, you are required to ask in a manner that is respectful and to provide me with advance warning. Aside from that, I will be doing exactly what you showed me to do, which is to drop and go. I will not change my behavior.

Despite the fact that she had first intended to dispute, she ultimately decided against doing so.

I smiled at her and responded, “Your move, dear.” I met her with a warm greeting.

As far as I could tell, she did not respond.

Having said that, what then? At book club, there has been a great deal of silence. At long last, it appeared as though the lesson had been absorbed.
