Brian Thompson’s loved ones were devastated after a violent attack took his life. His wife has spoken about the tragic death, sharing the family’s grief and offering details that may explain why this happened.
Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically killed, leaving the healthcare world, his family, and his community in shock. The 50-year-old was attacked in what authorities believe was a planned assault.
The shooting took place outside the New York Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, as Brian was on his way to an investor conference for UnitedHealth Group.
The gunman, who had apparently been waiting for some time, approached Brian from behind and shot him multiple times. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that he was shot in the back and the right calf before falling to the ground.
Despite efforts to save him, Brian was declared dead at Mount Sinai West hospital. The attacker fled the scene on foot and then rode away on a rental bike, heading toward Central Park. As of now, no arrests have been made, but Crime Stoppers has offered a $10,000 reward for information. Security footage of the attack revealed its chilling precision.
The footage showed Brian, dressed in a blue suit, walking when the gunman approached from behind. It appears the suspect waited for Brian, ignoring other people nearby.
The reason for the attack is still unclear, but police have confirmed that Brian had received threats recently. Brian, who lived in Maple Grove, Minnesota, is survived by his wife, Paulette, and their two sons.
Paulette, a physical therapist with over 20 years of experience, celebrated her 50th birthday in December 2023. She is known for her dedication to her family and career. Paulette and Brian both attended the University of Iowa.
Paulette has shared moments of her family life on social media, often posting about vacations and special times with her children. She revealed that Brian had mentioned receiving threats before the shooting, though she didn’t know the full details.
In an interview with NBC News, Paulette said, “There had been some threats. Basically, I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.”
Law enforcement is currently investigating the threats, but no further information has been released.
Paulette issued a statement after Brian’s death, expressing the deep pain the family is feeling: “We are shattered to hear about the senseless killing of our beloved Brian.”
“Brian was an incredibly loving, generous, talented man who truly lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives. Most importantly, Brian was an incredibly loving father to our two sons and will be greatly missed,” she added.
Brian’s death has deeply affected not only his family but also the healthcare industry. He joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and held many leadership positions, including chief financial officer for different business sectors.
In 2021, Brian became the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, where he expanded the company’s healthcare programs worldwide. Known for his innovative approach to healthcare, Brian was praised by colleagues for his leadership.
Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, said, “He was especially well-suited to help UnitedHealthcare improve how healthcare works for consumers, physicians, employers, governments, and our other partners.”
UnitedHealth Group expressed sadness after Brian’s death, stating, “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson. Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him.”
A Hilton employee commented on the unusual nature of the attack: “For this to happen in this area, it’s weird. For this guy to do it around here with all these cameras and everything, there’s got to be something behind it.”
In Minnetonka, Minnesota, UnitedHealthcare lowered its flags to half-staff in honor of Brian’s passing. Colleagues remember Brian not only for his professional vision but also for his kindness and the lasting impact he had on everyone he worked with.
For Paulette and her sons, the coming days will be filled with grief and questions. The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time, focusing on remembering the loving husband and father they lost.
