Teacher Accused Of 45 ‘Sexual Acts’ With Student Faces More Charges As Husband Continues To Support Her In Court

The former teacher has been hit with a growing list of serious charges involving a minor student.

Christina Formella is now facing a growing number of serious charges after investigators uncovered even more disturbing evidence tied to the alleged abuse case.

At the time of the accusations, Formella had been working as a teacher at Downers Grove South High School, located in a suburb of Chicago. Authorities say she was involved in a sexual relationship with a student who was just 15 years old.

Prosecutors now allege that the 30-year-old engaged in more than 45 sexual acts with the boy. They also believe she may have begun grooming him as early as age 14, long before the physical encounters began.

While speaking about the disturbing case, prosecutor Jaclyn McAndrew commented: “She knew what she was doing was wrong. [She is] is unbelievably conniving and unbelievably controlling.”

At this point, Formella is facing a total of 55 criminal charges, which include aggravated sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and grooming. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to 60 years in prison.

Despite the serious accusations, Formella’s husband, Michael Formella, has been standing by her. The two were seen walking hand-in-hand as they arrived at DuPage County Circuit Court on Tuesday, accompanied by their legal team.

Formella had originally been charged with only three criminal counts. After new evidence came to light, dozens more charges were added. On Tuesday, she entered a not guilty plea in response to the updated list of allegations.

Prosecutors urged the judge to revoke her bail and take her into custody, arguing that the charges are far too serious. However, the judge instead ordered her to wear an ankle monitor and allowed her to remain free while the case proceeds.

Authorities say Formella groomed the teenage student before eventually engaging in repeated sexual activity with him. These acts allegedly took place over 45 times at the high school, where she worked as a special education teacher.

In addition to what happened on school grounds, prosecutors claim Formella also had sex with the boy at least five times inside her home. Shockingly, those encounters are said to have taken place during regular school hours.

The inappropriate relationship reportedly began in January 2023. According to the State’s Attorney’s Office, it finally ended in September 2024 when the student told her it was wrong and put a stop to it.

Text messages exchanged between the two were a big part of the investigation. Prosecutors say the messages show that Formella often mentioned her husband and even said she had no plans to marry him. The couple eventually did marry over the summer, and officials believe the husband had no idea about the alleged relationship at the time.

Initially, investigators thought the case might be more limited. But once they combed through what they described as “hundreds if not thousands” of messages, they uncovered even more possible illegal acts that hadn’t been known before.

These messages helped back up the teen’s claims and added more weight to the charges being filed against Formella.

The judge decided not to put Formella behind bars for now. Instead, she was ordered to wear an ankle monitor to track her location. On top of that, the court has required monitoring software to be installed on all her electronic devices.
